Mummy Dearest
Feb 28th, 2012 by Alicia
Anna has decided she wants to learn lots more about ancient Egypt.
She took these photos at the Egyptian display at the Science Museum of Minnesota and she got even more hooked on that fascinating time and culture.
So it looks like we’re diving into some Egyptian fun!
Here’s a bit of stuff I’ve found on the subject to start us out tomorrow…
- PDF unit study from Homeschool Share
- 8 week unit study from Homeschool Helper Online
I haven’t looked at those in depth but they look quite thorough!
I also found this list of resources online and filtered out some dead or for-pay links but haven’t checked them all out yet…

And a few of my latest yappings elsewhere…

“The Story of the World” by Susan Wise Bauer has dirrections on how to mummify your own chicken. I can email them to you if you would like to try your hand at mummification!
Thanks Rebecca! We have SOTW and I know about the project. It does sound cool, although I think it takes several months if I remember right. Victoria loves chickens though so eating or mummifying them is out of the question here. LOL I’ve also seen directions on how to “mummify” a Barbie doll (not the real way, of course, but cute) and that’s a possibility too. And I think there’s an apple experiment out there… We’ll have to see what we figure out!
We’re also heading into an Ancient Egypt period. One resource I have filed away for a bit of fun is this online Ancient Egyptian typewriter – http://www.eyelid.co.uk/hieroglyphic-typewriter.html
It may give soem of those written projects an authentic but professional look.
Fun stuff! Maybe this is already on your list but when we “explored” ancient Egypt last year, the kids got a kick out of making mummies using old ugly thrift store Barbie dolls.
