The Little Alien Family
Aug 14th, 2008 by Alicia

Jack has been asking for kindergarten every day this week and so I’ve made time to do something special each day. We’ve made cakes, read books, done leaf rubbings and so on.
Yesterday he said he wanted to make paper dolls. We decided to do them freehand and I asked if he’d like alien or monster paper dolls. Both, he said!
It turns out that aliens don’t wear clothes anyway, so they were pretty easy paper dolls in that sense. They became quite a family production though.
I gave Jack some lavender cardstock to make his first alien. I gave him a glass to trace for the head. He needed to make extra heads though, since aliens have three. Of course!

Then he drew the body and we cut it out.
Even the baby helped.
Okay, help might be a stretch.

Now, he said, we need to make some alien babies. Aliens have 8 babies at a time, he tells me. Boy, they must have busy houses!
I cut out 8 cardstock rectangles and he started to draw alien babies. They only have one head as babies, luckily. The others grow in later.
The girls got back from swim class around then and asked if they could make alien babies too. Sure, he said. A half hour of happy drawing followed, complete with names and facts on the back about each one!

After that, they decided to put on an alien show. They used the kid makeup to give each other alien faces.

I wanted a computer break and I suggested they work as a team to come up with a family song. They loved the idea, and sent me away so I wouldn’t hear it ahead of time. Clever, eh?
Last night they performed their song in unison for me. It was so neat! They really did work as a team. Jack came up with sets of rhymes and the girls made lines to use them. Victoria wrote it all out in many colors, and Jack drew their home planet on the lyric sheet.
Here’s the song (I was informed I had to post it in the proper colors!)…
We’re the little alien kids
We’re so small we sleep in lids
We love chocolate covered pickles
And giant monster tickles!
We like math and learning too
We like to swim in the deep sea blue
We live way up in space
But we love our home place
We go surfing on a leaf
We dream to see the great barrier reef
We hope you have a super day!
The little alien family way!
What a cute post!
Love, love the song!
