29 Day Giving Challenge: Day 1
Aug 1st, 2008 by Alicia
Okay, I was going to wait until Monday to start the 29 Day Giving Challenge but it just worked out too well today.
First I decided that since I was bringing a giant pan of watermelon for all the kids in the play, that it would be a good start to the challenge.
I did that and it was a respectable start.
Daryl, the boys and I attended the play and watched our girls do a fabulous, fantastic, amazing job. The play was wonderful and I got lots of pics that I’ll post tomorrow when my computer isn’t being a pill (I’m typing on the kid computer now).
Afterwards, the girls were hanging out with the fabulous, fantastic, amazing directors, Kevin and Hayley. I thanked them for doing such a great job and making it such fun.
That’s them on the ends in this pic, with Anna next to Hayley in the purple dress and Victoria in the very middle as a gypsy…
Victoria and Anna were still hanging back so I said “okay, let’s go home for Dilly bars!”.
“Dilly bars?!” Kevin and Hayley exclaimed in mock envy and enthusiasm. “We love Dilly bars!”.
The girls cheered and hopped down and we left. As I got outside, I asked them if we should bring Kevin and Hayley two Dilly bars. They loved the idea. I told them there might not be enough for all of us to have some then and we decided to go for it anyway.
We raced home and grabbed two from the freezer. That left 3. I had promised Jack one for being quiet during the play and I had two little girls who love Dilly bars. I hadn’t had even one yet. Sigh. I took one for the team. I sighed a lot and reminded them what a wonderful mother they had too.
In the play, Kevin plays the role of Anna’s father and Hayley plays the gypsy queen (Victoria is a gypsy). The girls decided to present the Dilly bars in character. They raced back to the auditorium and Victoria kneeled on one knee, put one hand behind her back and presented the Dilly bar with flourish to Hayley. “For you, my queen.”
Anna curtsied and handed hers to Kevin.
Kevin and Hayley were floored and hooted out loud. We told them that we thought they’d earned them. They really did look tickled and Kevin said mint was his favorite kind.
When we got home, I gave the kids their Dilly bars. I played up the “poor mama gets no Dilly bar” bit with a lot of grins and Jack, bless his heart, held his Dilly bar out to me and said I could have it.
What a sweet boy!
I laughed and hugged him and said I wouldn’t take his Dilly bar, but he insisted. I finally offered to share it with him and it was agreed.
We handed it back and forth and took bites. It was darn good, I have to say.
Alex toddled over and shouted “aaaaaa!,” which is Alex-talk for “could I please have a bit of that?” and Anna, bless her heart, offered to share with him. With a messy one year old brother. Do you know how big that is?
There was generosity going in all directions! It was fabulous! Even Victoria started offering bits of her Dilly bar to those who were Dilly-less.
It was at that point that I told the kids about the 29 Day Giving Challenge and asked if they’d like to join me. I assured them that they didn’t have to give away their stuff and they never had to give something they didn’t want to give. They all liked the idea.
So here we go. Day one felt very nice.

I think this challenge/project is a wonderful idea and I’m going to see about starting it around here too. I’m not sure when, but I’ll try to write about it on my (hopefully-soon-to-be-revived) blog when I do. It sounds like your first day, although unintentional, was a fantastic start to some amazing giving.
And what a great opportunity your kids have with that theater group - congratulations to them and you!
What a wonderful day - great start!
