A Betsy-Tacy Party
Jun 14th, 2008 by Alicia
We’re attending a Victorian lawn party at Tacy’s house from the Betsy-Tacy book series today.
Daryl is a volunteer for the Betsy-Tacy society and he has created reader theater plays, scanned books, made coloring pages and more for them. We have visited Tacy’s house several times before for various events and it is always fun.
The Betsy-Tacy books are chapter books set in the early 1900’s about the lives and friendship of two (and then three) young girls. Maud Hart Lovelace based the books on her own childhood growing up in Mankato, Minnesota, and the Betsy-Tacy society owns the original houses where Maud (Betsy) and Francess (Tacy) lived. Another fun tidbit is that Daryl’s grandmother lives in the same neighborhood and his mother grew up just a couple of blocks from the real Betsy and Tacy, just about ten years later. We visit Grandma L. there often and it’s always neat to think about those stories happening right where we’re standing.
It is a sweet series of books and well suited for read-alouds and bedtime. If you aren’t familiar with the books, I recommend checking them out at your local library.
It should be a fun day!
My library doesn’t have them.
I will have to ask the librarian on Monday. Thank you for the suggestion.
We love the Betsy-Tacy books! I’ve read them to Madeline and she’s re-read them herself several times. I was just thinking that they would make good read-alouds for Ellie right about now. You are so lucky to live near all of these wonderful girl lit places - this and Little House. How cool to be involved with it the way you are too. Sounds like fun!
