Jack’s Giraffe Lapbook
Jun 2nd, 2008 by Alicia
It was Jack’s turn to do a lapbook so I asked him today what he’d like to do next. Since he’s working on a broad theme (”the universe and everything in it”), he’s pretty open to suggestions. He finally decided on giraffes.
I did some net searches and printed out an assortment of cool facts, basic info, coloring pages and photos. Then we sat down together and put it together.
We learned lots of cool stuff!
Did you know that giraffes need the least sleep of any mammal– from 10 minutes to 2 hours a day?
Did you know that giraffes are generally quiet but make an assortment of noises including snorts, moos, hisses, coughs and grunts?
Did you know that the lion is the adult giraffe’s only natural enemy but a solid kick from a giraffe can split a lion’s skull or break its spine? Or that in captivity the giraffe has another worry– they’re prone to lightning strikes!
We touched on habitat (grassy savannas of Africa), diet (mostly leaves, bark and twigs of the acacia tree), size (males can reach 19 feet) and interesting tidbits (Jack was tickled to find out that “necking” is where giraffes duel with their necks and bonk each other with their heads, but that they also “neck” by nuzzling necks with loved ones).
One interesting math bit was we glued in a printout of a giraffe next to a grid that showed 19 feet, and Jack drew himself and his dad to scale next to the giraffe. My, they were tiny!
It was a fun theme!
That looks and sounds awesome!
That was really interesting. I didn’t know they needed so little sleep. Imagine all we could do if we only needed that much sleep.
What a great topic Jack picked out to learn about.

Thank you for sharing your lapbook Jack. I learnt a lot from your research.
