Jack’s last Head Start day
May 15th, 2008 by Alicia
All our kids have gone through our local Head Start program. We are rural and it is home-based, so the “teacher” (Jack considers Jan his friend!) comes once a week to our house with boxes of goodies, books, games and art supplies and plays for an hour and a half, basically.
We also sit and talk the whole time, with the older kids happily showing off their latest artwork and HS projects to Jan while she’s here too.
Jack has had Jan as his Head Start teacher both years he was in the program, and he adores her. Today was his last day and we spent the time outside.
Jan brought paint and the kids all painted big rocks for the garden. She brought Boom Ball paddles and we played Boom Ball. She brought paint squirters and the kids squirted a design on a big plastic sheet. She brought crackers and juice boxes, and they had a picnic. She also gave him a present– a homemade photo album with pictures of his Head Start memories.
Eight years ago, a friend talked me into signing my little Victoria up for Head Start because the area teacher was “so much fun.” I never thought my kids particularly needed the program but we have always stuck with our local one because the teachers are just so neat. They love the kids and they understand that playing is the best way to learn.
I’ve really enjoyed having Jan in my kitchen for the past two years and will miss her greatly! Thanks Jan!
