Musings on Mother’s Day
May 11th, 2008 by Alicia
The baby kept me up late and woke me early, and now he’s running errands with Daddy while the rest of the house sleeps.
I wasn’t sure what to blog about today. Our plans? I’m not sure yet. Happy Mother’s Day to everybody else? Yeah, but then what?
It finally occurred to me that I want to wish a Happy Mother’s Day to a specific kind of mother that I’m really thankful for. I may not always be this kind of mom but it’s what I keep trying for, and I’m so glad there are so many wonderful mothers out there setting such a good example for me.
Thank You….
- To the mothers who share their wisdom with me and other mothers, online and in their communities.
- To the mothers who truly enjoy their children and let them know how much they’re loved and liked.
- To the mothers who parent with the goal of making happy, productive adults instead of easy, obedient children.
- To the mothers who do foster care, volunteer, and adopt children who need them.
- To the mothers who defy conventional wisdom or meddling in-laws and follow their own hearts when it comes to their babies.
- To the mothers who teach their children to stand up for what is right.
- To the mothers who share their knowledge and their passions with their children.
- To the mothers who kiss owies instead of telling kids to be tougher.
- To the mothers who encourage their children to choose their own paths.
- To the mothers who give monkey hugs, piggy-back rides and cuddles.
- To the mothers who assume the best and not the worst about their children.
- To the mothers who read parenting books, join e-groups and continually try to improve their parenting skills.
- To the mothers who don’t care as much about hairy legs or messy houses as happy children.
- To the mothers who let themselves have fun too.
- To the mothers who embrace differences in people instead of fearing them, who teach their children to see the common good in people.
- To the mothers who stay up late singing lullabies, reading poetry and telling stories.
- To the mothers who let their children have a childhood.
- To the mothers who count to ten when they are angry.
- To the mothers who let their children cry… even the boys.
- To the mothers who know how to laugh.
- To the mothes who let kids make their own art projects and their own mistakes.
- To the mothers who remember what it was like to be little.
- To the mothers who treat their children like people.
- To the mothers who spoil their kids with time instead of stuff.
- To the mothers who let their children make messes.
- To the mothers who protect their children and teach them how to protect themselves.
- To the mothers who make learning — and living– fun.
- To the mothers who inspire me, teach me, make me laugh and keep me company during this wild and wonderful journey of motherhood.
